In the style of Hayes Valley's Proxy development, another converted shipping container haven for retail and treats from coffee to beer, this one called The Yard, is opening tomorrow. At Mission Rock, it's within striking, or spectating, distance of AT&T Park, and it's going to be a prime pre-ballgame spot. Here's a first look.
The anchor tenant is in many ways Anchor Brewing Company, who have a 250-person beer garden waiting for you year-round from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. They'll be pouring 16 beers, including Yard Series offerings only available right there. Also, in a twist, they'll be pairing not with 4505 Meats as previously reported, but with the The Whole Beast. That nose (or snout)-to-tail meat grilling operation has, of late, won fans at The Hall on Market with some of the best cracklins in the city.
Then there's the Courtyard courtesy of the Off The Grid team. Food truck favorites like Proposition Chicken and Señor Sisig will be in tow, as well as a Humphrey Slocombe stand and a Peet's outpost. Also, The North Face is there, promising lots of orange gear for gamegoers, and there's an SFMade station for their group of associated local makers to sell their wares.
While the Giants' development plans for the area at China Basin/Mission Rock — which call for 650 housing units along with 1.7 million square feet of commercial space — wend their way through city bureaucracy, China Basin Ballpark Co., the team's real estate group, hopes to "activate" the space, sort of encapsulating the area's goals, in miniature with The Yard. And these days, it doesn't hurt to start a neighborhood with a beer garden.
