14-year-old Davon Ellis was reportedly walking down the street with friends on Saturday evening in Oakland's Fruitvale district when he was fatally shot, and now Oakland police are offering a $20,000 reward in exchange for information about the shooter, as KRON4 reports.
The shooting happened on the 3300 block of Brookdale Avenue just before 8 p.m. Saturday.
Oakland police Chief Sean Whent gave a statement saying, "All violent crime is tragic, but when the victim is a child it is even more so... I am asking the Oakland community to partner with us to bring this suspect to justice."
Ellis was a ninth grader at Oakland Technical High School, and as the Chronicle reports, grief counselors are scheduled to be on hand Monday to help counsel his classmates.
It is not clear if Ellis was the intended target of the shooting, and one person quoted by the Chron suggests it was likely a drive-by.
Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3821.
