It's Friday afternoon, and you know what that means: press releases from the San Francisco Police Department! This week, they've sent over the 2014's year end crime data. And, according to them, the news is good, with decreases in most crimes, except rapes — and they have a reason for that increase.
As we've discussed in the past, the SFPD uses the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting system to tabulate their stats. Based on that, the SFPD says, San Francisco Property Crimes were down 5.27 percent and Violent Crimes were down 4.52 percent compared to 2013, and "the rate of homicides continued to decline in 2014, ending with a total of 45, down 6.25 percent."
Total gun violence in SF was only one event shy of 2013's rate, and "the number of reported rapes in 2014 increased dramatically, as the data now reflects the expanded parameters of forcible rape." (As you might recall, we talked about this reporting change last November.)
They also released two handy spreadsheets on crime stats from 2009 to 2014. Want to see them? I knew you did! Here they are:
