The Brits love to poke fun at trashy, gun-toting Americans — and trust the British press was all over the story about the 3-year-old in New Mexico who accidentally shot both his parents. Add to that list Bay Area 18-year-old Nancy Sanchez and her new husband, Anthony Carrion, a former gang member, who just tied the knot in a San Bruno jail.

Nancy was one of the subjects of a new BBC 4 programme called Married Behind Bars, which aired last night. Per the descriptive copy: "Believe it or not, marriages are a common occurrence in prisons in the US. The happiest day of your life can include x-rays, strip-searches and bulletproof glass when you're tying the knot behind bars."

Nancy had a middle-school crush on Anthony, and even though they've never kissed — she won't get to have her first visit without glass between them until after his trial — she decided to marry him. She was at the jail visiting another friend when she spotted him, they started talking over the phone, and three weeks later he proposed.

What could possibly go wrong?

The Daily Mail explains further, almost excitedly, that "Further stress is placed on their relationship by the fact that Anthony and Nancy's family are from two rival gangs." Carrion is in prison and awaiting trial on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping, among others.

Nancy, being a wide-eyed 18-year-old, has no doubts whatsoever about her new husband. "He's cute and goofy. He always makes me laugh on our visits, even though it's through a window. I don't have any second thoughts I know he is the one."
