SFMTA just announced that you can start counting the days, if you want, until the introduction of a mobile payment app. This summer (exact date TBA), your phone becomes your ticket to ride, as well as your means of adding fare. It's planned for iOS and Android operating systems, and there won' be a change in pay structure.
According to SFMTA Director of Transportation, Ed Reiskin, “This mobile fare payment pilot program is part of our efforts to improve the customer’s experience on the Muni system. With this new app, riders will be able to buy tickets on their phones anywhere and anytime.”
That's it, that's the news. We've been anticipating this for a while, as the partnership with GlobeSherpa, a provider of mobile ticketing and payment software, was announced last September. Previously they created a ticketing app for Portland’s TriMet transit agency.
So kiss that clipper card goodbye! Except don't, because you'll still need it for BART. This is just for Muni.
