The Bay Area's busiest airport, SFO, expects to handle 1.3 million travelers between last Friday and December 1, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Add that to the designation as the nation's most chronically weather-delayed, according Department of Transportation data, and you might wind up with some time on your hands there today and tonight. Delays are definitely coming into play as the East Coast prepares for a mix of rain, sleet and snow In NYC, for example, 4 inches of precipitation is coming right up.

But from that, subtract a few pieces of good news and cheer for SFO. SFist spoke with Doug Yakel, SFO's Public Information Officer, about some of the airports amenities, and learned that for all today's hype as the worst day to travel last Friday was the airport's actual busiest. Thank god it's Wednesday, I guess. "The worst is behind us," said Yakel. "Certainly 5 or 10 years ago that was the case: today would have been the worst. But what we’re seeing now is people are taking the whole week off, so actually last Friday was the real busiest travel day, and the second busiest will be this coming Sunday." Good luck to all of us flying back Sunday, then.
There are two other pieces of relieving news: the first, SFO will have some (hopefully) stress-reducing musical artists playing. Says Yakel, "With our program 'You are hear,' we’re expanding the number of live musicians on the schedule at SFO. In years past, we would only have performances on Fridays through midday at the terminals, but we’re adding and evening schedule and a good mix of artists. We’re also going to be making music available from these artists for streaming and download." You can check that out here, if you hear something you like and are so inclined.
Second, there's a team of dogs to hang out with. This is the first Thanksgiving for the Wag Brigade, as its being called, which you can check out here if you won't have the pleasure of petting these adorable creatures IRL."Our brigade is almost one year old," says Yakel, "we’re up to about 20 handlers and dogs, and that gives us a lot of ability to have dogs in a variety of terminals at different times of the day. We certainly understand that this can be a stressful travel season, and this is all supposed to make the airport a little more enjoyable."
More good news: There are still parking spots available in SFO's lots, though those are expected to be gone by tomorrow according to the Merc.
And plenty of you will be trying out the freshly opened BART connector at Oakland Airport, which should add to comfort and maybe even reduce traffic at SFO.
And don't forget this excellent way to pass your (more than possible) delay east: 1966-1971 posters of the psychedelic rock era from Ben Marks in the International Terminal at SFO, on level 3 before the security check.
A few more pro tips: if you can afford it, the Weekly says to check out this AmEx Lounge. Also, if you'r partial to Terminal 2 but got stuck with Terminal 1, never fear: there's now an (open) secret passageway between them. We've also briefed you on where to grab a bite this year.
And best of all, there's no taxi blockade this week. So be thankful!
