Though never pretty, suspected DUI pullovers are rarely so upsetting.
At 10:34 p.m. on Saturday, police stopped a driver at Park Presidio and Funston who then barricaded himself in his car, threatening suicide. The man was armed with a knife with which he cut himself.
A hostage negotiation team responded and “had an extensive conversation with him,” as SFPD spokesman Officer Albie Esparza tells SFist. “Certainly the officers did a great job. We attempted to help this person out of this crisis, and anytime someone is in need, we always want to make sure we can help.” The entire incident led to heavy police presence in the area until 1 a.m., as Bay City News reports.
Officers also deployed non-lethal explosive devices known as flash-bang grenades to disorient and subdue the man.
Residents were asked to avoid the intersection, and the incident concluded when the man was successfully transported to a hospital.
