At least three San Francisco city vehicles were damaged after a man allegedly stole a flatbed crane truck and "played a game of bumper cars" in a Department of Public Works lot.

As KTVU reports, early in the afternoon of Friday, July 4th a supervisor at a DPW lot on Cesar Chavez Street spotted a man near the shed where they store items confiscated from homeless encampments. The man was ordered to leave—but he wouldn't be gone for long.

According to SFPD, the man, who police have yet to identify, then stole a truck in the Mission, which he used to drive into the DPW lot. From there, police say, the man managed to start a large, flatbed crane truck used by DPW's sewer and street repair division.

"We're still trying to determine whether there were keys in the truck, or wether he hotwired it," DPW spokesperson Rachel Gordon says.

SFPD spokesperson Danielle Newman says the man tried to run over the same supervisor who'd asked him to leave, then slammed into at least three city vehicles, a guard shack, and a security gate.

"We think it's well north of $100,000 worth of damage," Gordon says.

Police tell KTVU say that the man then abandoned the truck on a nearby street, then returned to attempt to steal another truck. At that point he was arrested, and was booked on attempted homicide, felony drug, vehicle theft, and other charges.
