Sweet mother of all that is holy, we are in trouble. At the recent 2014 Social Media Marketing World convention in San Diego, this guy wrote this song. It's about social media. Audience participation was required.
Have you watched it yet? "We're looking for the secreeeett, of Facebook's holy graaaaaail/ we try to keep from paying/ that leads to hashtag fail."
Have you laughed out loud or vomited yet? Just to be clear, people paid to attend this conference. This is right out of the Christopher Guest songbook, but it's real life. As a culture, ladies and gentlemen, we have turned a corner. Can we ever get back to a time before all that mattered to us was our virtual "social clout," the number of Likes on our new selfie, or the number of shares the latest bullshit Buzzfeed quiz just got in an hour, and someone wrote a song about it?
Oh, fine. Whatever. The song is hilarious. I'll stop sounding like Jonathan Franzen. But holy shit, talk about smarm.
