A car chase through the streets of East Oakland early Tuesday morning ended with the armed car thief getting shot and killed by CHP officers. It's unclear if the man posed a threat to the officers, or if he was just trying to run.
The chase began when CHP officers spotted a 2011 BMW X5 SUV driving on 580 near High Street with no license plates around 2:53 a.m., as the Tribune reports. They tried to stop the vehicle, but it got off the freeway, sped off down 57th Avenue and turned onto East 15th Street, which ended up being a dead end. The driver crashed into two parked cars and then tried to flee on foot with a gun in his hand.
The CHP officers then fired seven times on the man, fatally wounding him. They performed CPR but after paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither the driver nor the officers involved have been identified, and both CHP and the OPD are investigating at the scene.
