Good news for all you Lower Haighters and ice cream obsessives: Three Twins is reopening their Fillmore Street shop today after an almost two-and-a-half-year hiatus. And as Haighteration reports, they're now scooping a dozen flavors, four more than they used to serve at a time.
Truth be told, we kind of like their ice cream a little better than the ever-popular Bi-Rite Creamery, especially their Dad's Cardamom, Lemon Cookie, and Strawberry Je Ne Sais Quoi flavors. They use only organic ingredients, and every Gay Pride week they typically have a series of cheeky special edition flavors like Bear Bait, Rock Hudson Road, and Two Tops Don't Make a Bottom. Also, they once put on the menu a $3,000 sundae, and we're not sure anyone ever ordered it.
Three Twins was founded in 2005, originally in San Rafael, by twin brothers Neal and Carl Gottlieb and Carl's wife Liz, who are the three "twins" of the label.
The shop closed along with the Walgreens and a couple other businesses when their building at Fillmore and Haight was gutted by fire in September 2011. CVS replaced that Walgreens and opened a few months back, and now finally the ice cream shop returns, with hours daily starting at 11 a.m., closing at 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
And since it's plenty warm here for January still, there should be nothing stopping you from going and getting a cone, or one of their new ice cream sandwiches.
