How are you doing this morning? Did you find your gloves? Is your herb garden dead yet? Are the tips of your fingers like little icicles on your keyboard? How is the dog coping?

Yes, we know. It's beyond freezing, at least by our standards. Be glad you are not in San Jose, where the temperature hit 29 last night, but it's true, yes, it's very cold here too. Sunday night it hit 36 in S.F., according to reports, and that is awfully cold. Last night it hit 40. Not quite Midwest or East Coast cold. But still. Cold.

You shouldn't light a fire in your fireplace, though, because it's another Spare the Air Day. That means no grilling either, but it's not like you'd want to do that anyway when your back deck might as well be in deepest Russia it's so cold.

Gawker made fun of us for all of our complaining and teeth chattering, but you know, it's all relative, Gawker! We are weak and spoiled here, and our tender little bodies, while accustomed to dampness and fog, can not handle this type of chill.

In other news, unless we get dumped on with some rain in the next three weeks, which is of course possible, 2013 could beat out 1976 as the driest year on record in San Francisco. We've had an abysmal 5.6 inches of rain since January 1. That is nothing. An average year here means about 21.5 inches of rain, and in 1976 we got 8.7 inches. That's 3.1 inches left to go, which will take a couple of good storms.

In the meantime, it's going to be another chilly day and night before this Arctic misery lets up. According to Yahoo Weather, it could hit 38 degrees again tonight. And it's not going to improve a lot, but the lows by the end of the week will be back at a semi-reasonable 44 degrees.

And still no rain in sight.
