A shooting occurred this morning at Sparks Middle School in Sparks, Nevada, next door to Reno, around 7:15 a.m. Details are still coming in, but as the Reno Gazette-Journal reports, at least one 12-year-old boy and one other boy were shot and transported to an area hospital, and the shooter, who has not been identified, has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. One other person is dead, and others were possibly shot as well.
Students were all evacuated to a nearby elementary school, and then taken to Sparks High School where students from all area schools are now getting picked up by parents.
No motive or clear details in the shooting are being discussed at this time, only that the shooting occurred just as classes began.
A spokesperson for Renown Regional Hospital confirmed that they had two male patients, both minors, and both were in critical condition. Sparks Police have said that "several people were shot," and that two are dead, including the shooter.
Update: The second fatality has been identified as a popular math teacher at the school who was trying to protect students and get the shooter to put down his gun at the time he was shot. More eyewitness accounts of what happened this morning at Sparks Middle School are starting to paint a picture of a student lashing back after possibly being bullied, but still neither the shooter nor his victims have been identified.
Update 2: The dead teacher has been identified as Michael Landsberry, who served in the Nevada Army National Guard. He is being called a hero.
