Giants pitcher Sergio Romo never thought he'd have his face on an ice cream carton, and Three Twins founder Neal Gottlieb never imagined he'd be mentioned on ESPN. But that's just the sort of crossover greatness that went down when the two bridged the worlds of ice cream and baseball.

It all started with Romo's appearance at the parade following last year's World Series victory (it all seems so far off now, doesn't it?). As you may recall, Romo famously rocked a shirt reading "I just look illegal," using his platform to bring some awareness about perception and immigration policy to the event. Gottleib was inspired by Romo to create a mock-up of a Mexican Chocolate ice cream label and shared it on Twitter, and one thing led to another when Romo retweeted the post. Less than a year later, Romo's Mexican Chocolate flavor is a reality, complete with a grinning Romo cartoon on the pint container and the tagline "It only tastes illegal."

Yesterday, Three Twins premiered the flavor, and this humble writer got to meet Sergio and sample the new flavor. The initial report? Smooth and tasty ... and the ice cream wasn't bad either. Chocolatey and with that telltale hint of cinnamon, this flavor is no gimmick: it'll have a permanent spot in my freezer. The new ice cream is now available at select independent corner stores, natural food stores, Northern California Whole Foods locations and all Three Twins scoop shops.
