"You girls need to learn to fight," says head witch in charge Jessica Lange in the latest trailer for the upcoming third season of American Horror Story. "When witches don't fight, we burn." Ohgodohgodohgod this is going to be soooo campy.
E! Online doles out some more plot details today, like the fact that this witch school at the center of the drama, run by AHS regular Sarah Paulson, is called Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. Lange plays Paulson's mother, an ultra powerful witch who returns to town in response to some recent witch hunts, in order to scare some sense into the new recruits. And as discussed earlier, Kathy Bates is playing a 19th-century socialite-turned-serial killer who we think comes back from the dead, and Angela Bassett is playing a voodoo practitioner based on a real life person.
We believe the exterior shooting location for the show is St. Elizabeth's Orphanage and Museum, Anne Rice's former (creepy) home which is slated to be converted to condos.
And we're right to think all of this looks at least a little bit tongue-in-cheek. Executive producer Tim Minear recently told E! that "This year is a drama, but there is a lot of humor. We are embracing a kind of velocity and fun with the series this year." So, fewer mutants and rapes, we suppose. He also says, "the bigger themes of this season are oppression of minority groups of all kinds."
The new season premieres October 9 on FX and it features a cast of grand dames who are sure to chew some scenery, including Bassett, Bates, Patti Lupone, Frances Conroy, and Christine Ebersole.
