A two-alarm blaze that broke out on the 100 block of Tucker Avenue at about 12:40 a.m. this morning summoned firefighters to the scene, where they discovered about 60 marijuana plants and growing equipment. Police say that the ultimate hot box was boarded up with plywood and rigged with wiring to bypass the utility meter and disguise illegal activity.
No cause of fire was immediately identified, but Fire Battalion Chief Thomas Abbott said that these types of fires are becoming more and more common. "More often, it's becoming our bread-and-butter fire operation." Custom electrical wiring and the use of hot grow lamps make undercover grow houses especially susceptible to fire.
