Coincidentally, or not, two unions representing 2,470 city employees in Oakland are staging a one-day walkout today, the same day as the BART strike, in protest of what they say are stagnant wages in an economic uptick. Police and fire services aren't affected, but Oakland City Hall is closed, and so are all libraries and senior centers.
Also, there's no parking enforcement, street sweeping, animal control services, police records services, or fire and building inspections today.
Mayor Jean Quan offered to continue negotiations over the weekend, but apparently this was too little too late, and another bargaining session is scheduled for this Friday.
Sounds like a quiet day over there across the Bay.
Update: Strike over. “Today we took our struggle to the streets with a successful one-day strike intended to draw the public’s attention to the City’s inaction,” Pete Castelli, SEIU 1021’s Lead Negotiator for the Oakland contract. “We hope that the administration and Mayor Jean Quan got the message and will come to bargaining on July 9 ready to settle a fair, no-concessions contract that bolsters much-needed services and treats workers with respect.”
