This story, which happened in February, is just coming to light because the suspect is in court. But it seems that one Hugh Anthony Cregg, 62, a.k.a. Huey Lewis, jumped out of an idling rental car outside a motel in Mill Valley only to come back and find it gone. See, people! This totally happens in Marin sometimes.
Lewis, who's described as "a longtime Marin County figure who now lives in Montana," may not be the mega-millionaire we'd imagine he is because he was staying at a Holiday Inn Express while visiting Marin in February. Also, he was renting a 2012 Toyota Corolla, but we digress.
He left the car running outside the motel office on February 21, and it was quickly stolen by known local transient, Katherine Bowyer Gallagher, age 31. Gallagher had been seen near the motel at the time of the theft, and she was later nabbed and the car recovered, though she says she sold Huey's laptop.
Gallagher took a plea deal and is no longer in custody. She received credit for time served, and will be formally sentenced May 15 to 50 days for possession of stolen property. The vehicle theft charge was dropped.
Huey Lewis & the News are about to go on tour, and Huey was recently on Dancing With the Stars performing "The Heart of Rock and Roll" live on the show.
