As the smoke dies down in the Vatican, let's take a look at how Pope Francis I stacks up with San Francisco values. Here now, a list without commentary:
- He used to have a different Spanish name (Yerba Buena for us, Jorge for the Pope), before he renamed himself after St. Francis of Assisi.
- He's not Italian, but he does have some strong Italian heritage.
- He rides the bus. Although now he has on-demand limo service in the form of a Mercedes Popemobile.
- He was a bit of a foodie who eschewed the comforts of his peers and lived in a shitty apartment for awhile. The National Catholic Register reports he would often cook his own meals at home when he declined to live in the Archbishop's palace.
- A group of old white me picked him to lead the flock/create the next Facebook.
On the other hand, the newly christened Pope Francis believes adoption by gay couples is child abuse and that gay marriage (and contraception for that matter) is a "destructive attack on God's plan." So, there's that.
