We reported it two days ago as a nearly done deal, but the trade is going through: long-suffering 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is to be traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Alex Smith, whose name sports commentators often follow with "class act" for grimly tolerating much-tattooed Colin Kaepernick nicking his position as starting QB, is getting his wish to be either traded or released from his contract. Apparently being a football martyr is not nearly as fun as actually throwing the pigskin.
Smith will continue to play under his current contract, which guarantees a base salary of $8.5 million for the upcoming season, while in exchange the Niners will receive a second round pick in this year’s draft and a future draft choice.
Alex, you are good enough, smart enough and doggone it, people like you. Best of luck in all your new endeavors.
