On Saturday morning outside AT&T Park, just as fans were lining up outside for San Francisco Giants Fan Fest 2013, a female cyclist was killed after being hit by a cement truck. Both the woman and the cement truck were heading westbound on King Street when they collided.
The victim, identified by the medical examiner's office identified 48-year old San Francisco resident Diane Sullivan, was taken to a nearby hospital where she later succumbed to life-threatening injuries.
According to ABC 7, "The driver stopped immediately after the crash and is cooperating with the police investigation." Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factor in yesterday's fatal accident. While describing the scene, San Francisco police Sgt. Frank Harre told KTVU, “You do have a big cement truck with a big wheel base and preliminary reports are that she was curbside on her bike, riding, and somehow became entangled."
The accident is still under investigation.
If anything good can come out of yesterday's tragic death it would be for the city to make our increasingly busy streets safer for cyclists. As one friend of SFist pointed out, "Physically-separated, buffered bike lanes should be the MINIMUM design requirement for any high-volume city streets."
