Pardon us if we hound this guy (pun certainly intended) until the local cops track him down, but the man you see pictured here is one Laurice Barrett — the very same man captured on security camera footage fleeing the scene after allegedly throwing a yappy but defenseless Pekingnese into Leavenworth Street a few weeks ago. Barrett reportedly made off with a mere $5 in the incident, but since the SFPD is all about publicly shaming criminals and crowdsourcing detective work these days, we figure it won't be long before Barrett is brought to justice for the robbery/canicide.
A few more details have also emerged around the mugging incident: Bay Area News Group is now reporting that the victim had actually pulled over at Leavenworth and McAllister and walked around to the passenger side to search for her cellphone, which had fallen on the floor of the car. Barrett allegedly grabbed the five dollars from her sweater pocket while she was hunched over looking for the phone. When Barrett demanded more money, the 18-pound Roxie started to bark and Barrett threatened to "kill [her] fucking dog."
Barrett is facing felony charges of robbery and animal cruelty. SFPD is currently offering a $3,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest. According to Officer Carlos Manfredi, Barrett's mugshot was on file from a previous arrest and the victim recognized him as the man who snatched her Pekingese from the car. Barrett is apparently known to frequent San Francisco, but it is currently unclear whether he actually lives here.
If you happen to see Barrett about town, you are encouraged to call SFPD at 415-929-9446. Or send anonymous tips via text to 847411 with the word "SFPD" in the message. Donations to the reward fund can be made to the "Roxie the Dog Reward Fund," account No. 0100219702 at the Gateway Bank branch at 919 Clement St. in San Francisco or the branch at 18th and Webster streets in Oakland.
[Ed. Note: Added "allegedly" to note that Barrett has not yet been convicted of animal cruelty.]
