At yesterday's Board of Supervisors meeting, David Chiu was once again chosen as President of the Board, for his third consecutive term. Speculation about a possible changing of the guard in the President's chair proved unfounded as Jane Kim and Malia Cohen withdrew their names from consideration, and Supervisor Scott Wiener (who'd been rumored to be interested in the job) did not seek the nomination either.
Kim and Cohen had earlier nominated each other in a symbolic gesture about "empowering women of color." But that was all it was. A gesture.
Apart from being first in line for the Mayor's job should the mayor die (or get assassinated, as was the case with George Moscone in 1978, making Dianne Feinstein Mayor), the job of President of the Board of Supervisors is basically a ceremonial one.
The rumors about Wiener taking the job appear to have come via some maneuverings by Rose Pak, who was lobbying a couple of the Supes to get Chiu out of the chair, according to the Weekly, and London Breed who had expressed some interest in having Wiener take the job. Wiener, meanwhile, has been on vacation in Mexico for the last week.
In the end, Chiu was re-elected unanimously, by an 11-0 vote.
