If there was one local political story that most occupied the hearts and minds of San Franciscans in 2012, it was the domestic violence case and subsequent public shaming of former supervisor turned sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. And yet the Guardian, our town's most politically sensitive and Leftist paper, just released its annual Off-Guard Awards, devoted to "the dumbest, lamest, most pitiful, and most bizarre" political moments of the year with the theme of "White Men Behaving (Very) Badly," fails to mention the admittedly bad behavior of their favorite son.

Earlier years' examples have included multiple shout-outs to Newsom, Ed Lee, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Supervisor Scott Wiener (who gets another this year for the nudity ban under the heading "WOW — THE DISTRICT 8 SUPERVISOR HAS BEEN OVERWHELMED BY A COUPLE OF OLD MEN'S FLACCID DICKS").

Also, there are some more mentions of Rick Perry this year, whose existence we personally had forgotten.

But, alas, the only end-of-year acknowledgment they give to the Mirkarimi case is one last finger-point at Mayor Ed Lee. "GUESS IT'S OKAY TO PERJURE YOURSELF IF YOU'RE THE MAYOR," goes the headline, referring to Christina Olague's public statements about discussing the case with the mayor, only to have him testify before the Ethics Commission that he had never discussed it with members of the board of Supervisors.

The Guardian has, previously, acknowledged that Mirkarimi was not blameless in all this, though they've maintained that efforts to remove him from office were purely political and not justified by the incident in which he bruised wife Eliana Lopez's arm and plead guilty to falsely imprisoning her.

Mirkarimi's fate still remains uncertain as a signature drive has already begun to put a measure on next November's ballot to recall him as sheriff.
