In chicken-fried news today: beloved Guatemalan chicken chain Pollo Campero opened their first full-service location in the U.S. on Mission Street.

Although the chain currently has a few dozen fast food style locations around the US, devotees have been known known to carry takeout on flights back from Latin America. The Mission Street location, which sits between 23rd and 24th Streets is their first in San Francisco and the first in the States to offer table service for their menu of grilled and fried poulty, yucca fries, sweet plantains and other Latin-inspired items.

This latest addition to the Pollo Campero's stateside offerings opened for lunch service today, but only after about two years of permitting and construction delays. The chain received a great deal of early support in the heart of the city's most Latin-influenced district, even though San Franciscans tend to bristle at the thought of formula retail ruining the flavor of their local business districts. Back in 2011, however, the neighbors started to oppose the project when they caught wind of the restaurant's plan to build a 1,250 square-foot patio.
