An armed suspected gang member was shot while fleeing from an undercover police officer last night, and the incident sparked an almost immediate, angry protest, at least 100 strong, outside Mission Police Station. Someone spray painted the word "Killers" on the front door of the station, and the protesters proceeded to march through the Mission.
The shooting occurred just after 8 p.m. on the 200 block of 14th Street (at Natoma), and it stemmed from a plainclothes officer with the gang task force who was patrolling the area and who attempted to talk to one of two individuals whom officers had identified as gang members. The suspect bolted down the block, then brandished a weapon, which was later determined to be a TEC-9 pistol. Police say he began raising the weapon toward the officer, who shot him twice. The suspect was then transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
By 10:30 p.m., word had gotten out about the incident, and approximately 100 individuals, some wearing black masks in the style of the Black Bloc, had gathered around Mission Police Station in angry protest of the event. A small group of 30 or so protesters then continued to march through the Mission chanting "Fuck the Police."
According to an early report from Mission Mission, the initial rumor sounds like it was "18 year old shot in the back by police and killed." But it sounds as though the suspect was not fatally hurt, and was not shot in the back, and was also armed and moving to fire on an officer.
