A man who was possibly lying in the East Bay-bound tracks at Glen Park Station on Saturday was struck by a train around 2:30 p.m. and later died of his injuries. The man, who has not been identified, was found stuck underneath the train with severe head injuries and taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon. It's not clear why he was on the tracks, and the driver did not see him before the train struck him, nor were there any other witnesses.
The station was closed for two hours Saturday while the man was extricated from under the train and the incident was investigated, and BART was running on a single track. The driver said he was aware the train may have hit something, so he stopped the train. The man had been on the tracks inside the station near one tunnel, about two car lengths in.
It was the second such incident in 24 hours; another man was struck at Lake Merritt Station on Friday afternoon, and he survived his injuries after being pinned under a train for almost an hour. In that incident police said they did not know why the man was on the tracks but they were not ruling out a suicide attempt.
