A story of a daring Pacific Ocean journey comes to us by way of the pinniped beat today: A northern fur seal somehow ended up on a beach on Oahu this past Tuesday. Apparently this is the first time of one of those adorable little creatures has left the cold waters off of California, Alaska and Russia for something a little warmer. The lone female seal was accompanied by a vet, who seemed to think she was lost for some reason, on a FedEx flight back to Oakland.
Mercifully, the good folks at the Marine Mammal Center, the ones who are always rescuing sea lions after they get shot in the face, are taking her to rehab at their facility in Sausalito.
According to the AP, the poor girl was emaciated, underweight and weak when she was found on the beach in Oahu, but she probably would have been fine after a couple of fish tacos and a drink with an umbrella in it. Now she's living the pampered life in Sausalito until she's ready to brave the ocean again herself.
