At the SoMa headquarters of Current TV, the locally based alternative news channel reportedly fell victim to a curious heist over the weekend. In the very same building where the Lieutenant Governor films "The Gavin Newsom Show," an unidentified suspect broke in wearing cat burglar garb and a backpack, reportedly taking several laptops "and a pair of shoes" out of millions of dollars of electronic equipment. Begging the question: Did someone break in to Current TV to steal Gavin Newsom's shoes?
As a source who works in the building told SFist today, the suspect was caught on camera breaking in to the building wearing a cap, mask, gloves and a backpack around 1 a.m. Saturday morning. The suspect apparently tried to hotwire an elevator before breaking out a panel to gain access to another floor. According to our source, one of the elevators on the Townsend Street side of the building was out of service as of this morning due to the bungled hotwire attempt.
A representative of Current TV told SFist in an email this afternoon, the burglar took four laptops "and a pair of shoes" during the break in. No word yet on if those laptops had any significance, or if those shoes were taken from The Gavin Newsom Show's wardrobe department (or if they were even men's shoes for that matter), but we'll be sure to keep our eyes peeled if the Lite Gov's loafers show up on eBay.
When reached by SFist for more information, SFPD did not yet have an official record of the incident in their system. More on this as it develops.
