This month, in addition to the big celebrations for the 75th birthday of the Golden Gate Bridge happening over Memorial Day, it's also the anniversary of the opening of what was once known as the New Mint, the fortress on Hermann Street above the Safeway, near Church. Did you know they started minting quarters there again this year after not doing so for 60 years because of their value to collectors? They also do a lot of commemorative coins, and it's really nice inside.

Haighteration went on a press tour the other day and took a bunch of very pretty pictures, so we'll defer to them. The Art Deco lobby, pictured toward the bottom, is especially pretty.

In honor of the 75th anniversary, they're doing a reverse commemorative coin of a century-old American Eagle coin, done in silver, which will be on sale as part of a set for four weeks in June.
