We have two sad highway tragedies to share with you today. The first occurred this morning in Pleasanton when a woman tried to run across six lanes of speeding traffic on I-580 around 6:15 a.m. She was struck by a car in the center lane and died, causing three eastbound lanes to get closed during rush hour this morning. The woman is described as being in her 50s, and it is not known why she was running into traffic. She was reportedly waving her arms in the air and running toward the center divide.
The second accident occurred Wednesday night when a 42-year-old woman, possibly very drunk, swerved across the median on Highway 101 in Monterey County and killed three people in the process, injuring several others, and causing an eight-car pile-up. The victims were all on their way home from a funeral, and caravaning in multiple cars back to the Bay Area. The(allegedly) drunk driver's name is Vivian Ramirez, and she's set to be arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence once she gets out of the hospital, where she's being treated for minor injuries.
