A security guard at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio was just awarded $465,000 by a San Francisco jury in a case against Los Angeles-based Andrews International, a private security firm. 27-year-old Abas Idris claimed that coworkers at the Letterman campus referred to him as a terrorist and called him an al-Qaida member. He later quit his job.
Andrews claims they promoted the man to a supervisory position, and they are appealing the verdict.
Idris, who traces his heritage to Eritrea, says he was also told by a supervisor that he looked "too black" when he zipped up his black rain jacket, and was told to keep it unzipped. He was awarded $400,000 in punitive damages Monday in addition to an earlier award of $65,000 for lost wages and emotional distress
We're sure neither the George Lucas folks, nor Yoda, would approve of this sort of workplace behavior.
