In the aftermath of Sunday's NFC Championship loss, some press statements from Giants players are suggesting that unfortunate fumbler Kyle Williams was targeted from early in the game because of his known history of concussions. When asked in the locker room whether it was a weakness of technique that cost the 49ers' wide receiver from keeping the ball in that game-changing moment Sunday, the Giants' Jacquian Williams, who forced the second fumble, said "Nah.
The thing is, we knew he had four concussions, so that was our biggest thing, was to take him outta the game." Though it may be standard procedure in the NFL to go after injured players, New York Magazine suggests this situation could warrant further investigation, now that the league has been more sensitive to protecting players from brain injuries.
Furthermore, the Giants' Devin Thomas, who recovered the ball in the second fumble, told the Star-Ledger, "He’s had a lot of concussions. We were just like, ‘We gotta put a hit on that guy.’ ... [Giants reserve safety Tyler] Sash did a great job hitting him early and he looked kind of dazed when he got up. I feel like that made a difference and he coughed it up."
So even though Kyle Williams has owned up to his mistakes and made no excuses so far, maybe we should go easy on the guy.
