We spotted the below advertisement for Brian Wilson's new offseason gig over on ad industry blog SFEgoist [no relation], and... well, we're not sure exactly what Brian Wilson is trying to pitch here. (Get it? Advertising puns.) The Egoist says the video landed in their inbox with a cryptic press release, reading: On September 29th, San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian Wilson (the guy with the beard) will announce he’s becoming the first athlete in history to host a virtual event. Which: what? So he's going to be like a hologram? Well, yeah kind of. Just watch the video:
Two things to note here: 1) We haven't seen computer animation this good since The Lawnmower Man. And 2) So his new job is to be stuck inside of a computer generated version of San Francisco? Is that what we're getting out of this?
In all seriousness, we checked out ON24.com works and appears to be a legit website marketing an actual product or service. It apparently has something to do with virtual reality and teleconferencing and is possibly related to the Oracle OpenWorld conference this weekend — but we're still confused. Is this some sort of performance art? This is a viral thing, isn't it? We're pretty sure this is a viral thing. Are we being duped? Living in the future is hard. How do you do it inside the mainframe, Brian?
