Temporary Mayor Ed Lee was in Baltimore for the U.S. Conference of Mayors over the weekend, but since no one cares what happens in Baltimore unless it was scripted for HBO, we turn our attention to the man who filled Ed Lee's loafers while he was away: As the Bay Area Reporter noted yesterday, the interim mayor quietly appointed Castro supervisor Scott Wiener to hold down the fort during his four-day absence.

The Mayor's office declined to send out a notice to the press about the appointment and Wiener himself humbly avoided the usual social media braggadocio by going dark on his Facebook and Twitter feeds. Fellow Supervisor David Campos attributed this to the recent scandal in New York, but we imagine the taller Wiener didn't want to overshadow temporary mayor Ed Lee and the wave of positive public opinion he's been riding lately.

Wiener's four day term as the temporary interim mayor lasted from Thursday the 16th to yesterday June 19th and was free of any radical appointments or earth-shattering changes to the city. Wiener oversaw the reopening of the Anza Branch library in the Outer Richmond as well as a couple of Chinatown events (Boy, those attendees were probably surprised). It was also, coincidentally, one of the worst losing streaks the San Francisco Giants have endured this season — Not that the team's performance should necessarily be tied to who's got the chair in Room 200. No controversial appointments were made while Lee was away.

When reached for comment about his brief term, Wiener told us via email, "I could feel the power coursing through my veins as I handed out proclamations signed by the Mayor."
