A 36-year-old man collapsed and died right after crossing the finish line of the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon Sunday morning. The man has just been identified as 36-year-old Peter Hass of Orinda. Witnesses say that five race volunteers rushed to perform CPR on Hass following a confused scene, and the Chron reports that it took 20 minutes before paramedics arrived, due in part because the SFFD dispatcher was given three different locations for the incident.
The race wound through Golden Gate Park and down the Great Highway, totaling 13.1 miles. 10,000 runners participated in the event, with registrations selling out. The full race finishing results are here, showing that Hass ran an approximate 9-minute mile, finishing 2074th out of 10,000, clocking at 1 hour and 57 minutes.
