Residents of San Francisco's 6,500 public housing units: Welcome to the Internet!
Yesterday, Mayor Newsom's office announced 33 public housing sites around the city now have free broadband and wireless Internet access as part of a joint initiative between the Department of Technology and the San Francisco Housing Authority. The Mayor's statement expounded on the the "new opportunities for jobs, education, and a better quality of life" that comes with access to all of the world's collective knowledge. (And Facebook.)
In addition to the WiFi upgrades to existing housing developments, the city has also put $95 million towards HOPE SF which will rebuild aging public housing and do a great deal more for improving the quality of life for the very low-income families, seniors and disabled city residents that they serve.
