The Chronicle came out with an article this morning with data stating that 800 pedestrians get hit by cars in San Francisco each year, about two per day, which is a higher ratio than in other big walking cities, such as New York, London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
The numbers go up a bit higher in December due to more congested traffic, fewer daylight hours, increased alcohol use, and winter weather. So, look out for each other this holiday season, Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Drivers!
The most dangerous neighborhoods include the Financial District, the Tenderloin, South of Market, and Bayview. According to the article, the cost of treating 3,619 injured pedestrians between 2004 and 2008 amounted to $171 million in 2008 dollars, three-quarters of which were paid by public funds.
Let's hope Board of Supervisors President David Chiu follows through with his pledge to address pedestrian safety in the coming year. Want to help make sure he remembers? Join the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee. Their next meeting is Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall room 408.
