Today, an historic day, is the day when Proposition 8 sponsors appeal U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling that overturned California's voter-approved ban on gay marriage back in August. Hitting a bull's-eye in his ruling, "Walker said the 2008 initiative violated the Constitution's promise of due process and equal treatment."
How will it all go down today? Let's see: "The arguments will be heard by three randomly-picked judges: one is liberal, one is moderate but favors equality, and one is probably a Mormon," Stop8.org points out. "The anti-gay groups wanted the liberal judge to remove himself, but he refused. Nobody asked the probable-Mormon to remove himself."
Oral arguments will go on around for two hours starting at 10 a.m. (PST) They will be aired live on C-SPAN and other California TV stations.
But isn't going against voters' wishes wrong, you bemoan? Not quite. "In 1948, the idea of interracial marriage in the United States was almost unimaginable," noted the LA Times. "The few polls on this topic at the time showed that Americans were nearly unanimous in their disapproval of it."
