A Texas man has been arrested in connection with the 1969 murder of Chris Lopes, a case which remained unsolved until now. The death of the 19-year-old basketball star and Monterey Peninsula College freshman, who was killed during a fight at the Del Monte Manor apartments in Seaside on December 21, 1969, left his family deeply bereaved and they've been without closure on the case ever since.
The Monterey Peninsula Cold Case Project recently found a new lead in the case, an eyewitness who had never come forward. This led them to find James Terry Mason, age 58, who was living in Cedar Hill, Texas, and who was ready to admit to the crime after having a recent brush with death himself. As NBC reports, he has waived his extradition from Texas and will be arraigned in Monterey County within the next two weeks. [NBC Bay Area]
