The Examiner was there, and KGO put up a brief note about the car that spontaneously combusted in downtown S.F. yesterday as well. But as a few commenters noted, it's surprising that this incident wasn't bigger news in the mainstream media. If it had happened in New York or Los Angeles, it would have certainly been more than a tiny blip on the radar.
According to the Examiner, the driver noticed smoke coming from his hood as he was driving and quickly pulled over. He was able to jump out just before it burst into flames.
Still no word on what caused the explosion, exactly. SFFD told SFist that it was "just a basic car fire" that received a lot of attention due to "lots of smoke."
