A pit bull woke her owner living above the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society after the building caught fire. The blaze sparked at around midnight. Although 12 cats died in the fire,10 other cats and 14 dogs were rescued. "It was an immediate response by the volunteers, who worked side by side with fire and evacuated animals," Assistant Fire Chief Sabina Imrie explained to The Chronicle. The shelter is now asking the public's help with donations and temporary foster care. [SF Chron]
