Protesters gathered at Pier 33 yesterday to draw attention to the firing of longtime Alcatraz Cruises employee Vincent Atos, who was suspended last year over a sexual harassment complaint for being "too gay." Atos was, at the time, trying to organize a union for cruise workers and suspects this had something to do with his punishment.

Ultimately, as Fog City Journal reports, he was fired from his position (SF Weekly has a bit more coverage on the matter), and labor activists and queer activists joined forces in protesting what they see as an obvious case of discrimination.

Alcatraz Cruises is saying only that they have a "zero-tolerance harassment policy and there is no discrimination whatsoever." Atos was voted Employee of the Year by his co-workers prior to his censure for being, as he alleges, too "limp-wrist" and making co-workers and tourists uncomfortable with his behavior.
