We're taking a mini-break here from featuring a drink from a local bartender to bring you a perhaps little known recipe we dug up for The San Francisco Cocktail. We believe it dates back to The Savoy Cocktail Book, but without a copy handy we'll need to confirm this later up at The Alembic.
It's made with two kinds of bitters and two kinds of vermouth, and something that's kind of making a comeback: sloe gin. (We will avoid mentioning here a certain other cocktail that bears our city's name that is made with crème de banana. So gross.) Perhaps a bartender out there would like to take a stab at reinventing this little recipe so that it's a little more befitting our farmer-market-driven / house-made-bitters cocktail culture? Do let us know.
The San Francisco Cocktail
3/4 oz sweet vermouth
3/4 oz dry vermouth
3/4 oz sloe gin
1 dash orange bitters
1 dash bitters
Shake all ingredients and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry.
