With a heavy dose of coffee, free muffins and hat tips to Nancy Pelosi, the Central Subway officially broke ground today. Happening just outside SFist headquarters, we couldn't resist throwing on an overcoat, heading over and hitting the refreshment table, hitting it hard.

Mayor Newsom, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, SFMTA Evasive Director/CEO Nat Ford, Bevan Dufty, Ross Mirkarimi, and a KRON 4 hatchback all showed up. Lots of words were said, dollar amounts tossed about, and free coffee moved the bowels of journalists and wonks under the I-80 freeway at Fourth and Stillman Streets.

Ta-da.

Not much happened, really. The usual banter: the Central Subway will whisk people from the trans station to Chinatown, which should prove helpful and shiny; thanks-yous were said; dark ties were worn. But! You should be be aware that the project will take a few years, so you can look forward to traffic delays and more.

Obligatory: Too bad the thing isn't going to the Outer Richmond. Alas.
