The bad news is, the post-Thanksgiving weekend brought Oakland's 2009 homicide count over the 100 mark -- with 52-year-old Enoch Reed shot on Friday in East Oakland, and Jermel Holloway on Sunday night, shot while walking on the street by himself, revisiting his old West Oakland neighborhood to mark the anniversary of the death of a friend.
In both cases, Oakland's ShotSpotter acoustic surveillance system failed to help police catch any assailants in time, and they're looking for witnesses to either incident.
The murder rate is continuing to slow in Oakland, however, perhaps due to this high-tech system or due simply to the work of police. Last year at this time, there had been 115 homicides in the city, and in 2006 the full-year tally was 148.
As of today, the total number of 2009 homicides in San Francisco is 44.
