The Field Poll came out with their August 2009 California Opinion Index (PDF), which indicates that California Democrats and Non-Partisans have become more progressive on hot topics in the past thirty years, whereas Republicans have pretty much stayed the same or are more conservative.
- Support Same-Sex Marriage: 64% of Democrats / 23% Republicans 2006/2009 vs. 29% Democrats / 30% Republicans in 1975/1977.
- Support Abortion: 82% Democrats / 55% Republicans in 2006/09 vs. 52% Democrats / 50% Republicans in 1975/77.
- Support Euthanasia: 80% Democrats / 59% Republicans in 2006/09 vs. 60% Democrats / 66% Republicans in 1975/77.
- Against Death Penalty: 40% Democrats / 16% Republicans in 2006/09 vs. 28% Democrats / 11% Republicans in 1975/77.
Interestingly, the numbers for both parties went down with regards to their opinion of California being "one of the best places" to live. Democrats went from 73% in 1977/1978 to 45% in 2008/2009, and Republicans went from 80% in 1977/78 to 30% in 2008/09.
