First, the good news: Mayor Gavin Newsom picked a new police chief, one that will follow Heather Fong, who announced her retirement last December.
Now the bad news: The chosen one, according to Chron, is "thinking twice about accepting the job after a Board of Supervisors' committee voted to strip public safety agencies of tens of millions of dollars in funding." If you recall, the final three candidates -- which included neither dames nor anyone from inside the SFPD -- were handed to Newsom earlier this week for his approval.
Anyway, Newsom claims he was thrown under the bus, or whatever, by the Supes. Newsom explained to the Chron, "This board acted without my understanding of their intent ... It's a very dangerous game. I don't know what they're trying to do. I am stunned. Thank God we have a mayor."
Thank the Lord above, indeed.
But then, the Board of Supervisors were all, dude, are you for real? BOS President David Chiu responded, "I'm surprised at the mayor's emotional reaction to a legitimate, genuine policy debate ... When he calms down, I look forward to working with him to develop a budget that reflects our shared policy priorities."
Alas. Did you really think this would all happen without some sort of presumably petty, internal drama? Of course not.
