Ending a few days of speculation, it was announced that as expected, Mike Nolan will once again be prowling the sidelines in his spiffy suit as head coach of your San Francisco 49ers. He will, however, no longer be the Head Cheese as Scot McCloughan will take over in that role. Personally, we think the Yorks did this all backwards as they should have hired the personnel type guy first instead of the coach-- especially as the coach was somebody with absolutely no experience in doing either-- but what do we know? We're only bloggers.
Apparently, Nolan was actually hanging on by the hairs of his chinny-chin-chin but managed to convince the Yorks to keep him after issuing the meaist of mea culpas and took responsibility for everything. Also in his favor was the fact that there is no really exciting head coaching possibility out there, or at least that's the conclusion the Yorks made after only a few days of looking. Besides his demotion, Nolan will pretty much have to replace anyone who wore a headset on the offensive side of the ball this season, and no Mike Martz ain't gonna happen (so the smart move)
Whether this is all good or not is to be seen. Nolan has had his nose spanked in a very public fashion and is pretty much seen as one mighty quacking lame duck. Still to be answered too is how things will go between him and the Franchise, Alex Smith, other than having him compete with Shaun Hill. Also up in the air is if Nolan can still coach at all as most evidence would point to no, but the idea in all of this is that if Nolan didn't have to worry about everything on the team, he would only have to worry about coaching. For those keeping score, head coaches who lose three years in a row do not have a good record in turning things around.
Put us down as probably the wise move, but like others, definitely skeptical.
