You know we'd never say Chris Daly backed down from a fight, especially not in the title of a post!
However, we did just get an email from the Gavin Newsom 2008 people noting that the Board of Supes Budget Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled. That was the meeting that was supposed to be the proxy mayoral race over Daly and Newsom's competing visions of the city (i.e., whether we were going to fund affordable housing or the Friends of the Urban Forest.)
So what happened? Who blinked? Don't ask us!
If we had to guess, though, we'd assume either or both parties decided it wasn't worth the increasing firepower being expended and the ensuing political collateral damage, and are trying to meet in the middle. You know, the way the political process is supposed to work.
Does that mean Daly's not introducing his promised No On The Blue Angels proclamation tomorrow either? Also, it's unclear whether the dueling Newsom and Daly rallies that were scheduled for the same time tomorrow are cancelled. You got your chocolate in my peanut butter!
Update: We've gotten it confirmed that the Newsom rally tomorrow at noon is still on! Daly folks, be there or be square.
Another update!: (and we promise not to turn the whole site bold again, sorry about that.) Daly releases a statement saying that Newsom pulled strings to schedule their rally for the same time as his, and says that's why he cancelled the budget meeting. So many updates! We can't even focus on our Oh No Ed Jew post (which is coming shortly, we promise). The Guardian's got something up now too.
